In late March, we decided to take our website seriously.
On April 5th, the new site went live.
A few weeks later, we searched Google and finally saw ourselves show up.
This is part of a running journal.
Some wins are loud.
Some are just a screenshot on a random day that means more than anyone else would understand.
This was one of those.
The main takeaways from this:
• Ranking on Google in Lebanon, MO started with a decision in late March
• The website launch on April 5th was only the beginning
• We learned while building, not before
• Small changes created momentum
• Sometimes progress looks like proof, not perfection
Ranking on Google in Lebanon, MO started with a decision in late March
Late March was really the starting point.
That’s when I decided to stop looking at the website like something we “needed to have” and start looking at it like something that could actually help the business.
Up until then, I knew websites mattered.
I knew Google mattered.
I knew SEO mattered.
But knowing something matters and actually doing the work are two different things.
So I started digging in.
Trying to understand pages.
Trying to understand keywords.
Trying to understand how local businesses get found.
Trying to understand why some businesses show up and others don’t.
It was less glamorous than people think.
Mostly just learning and adjusting every day.
The website launch on April 5th was only the beginning
When the site went live on April 5th, it would have been easy to think the work was done.
Honestly, that’s how a lot of people probably see websites.
Build it. Publish it. Move on.
But that wasn’t the reality.
Going live was more like opening the door.
After that came:
Tweaking pages.
Changing headlines.
Fixing structure.
Writing clearer copy.
Adding service pages.
Learning what H1 and H2 headings actually do.
Trying to make the site easier for people and Google to understand.
That connects to something I wrote in What Building Our Own Site Taught Us About Small Business Website SEO in Lebanon, MO. Building the site was helpful. Improving it after launch mattered even more.
We learned while building, not before
I think this part matters because people assume everyone else has it figured out.
We didn’t.
Not even close.
We weren’t experts who decided to build a website.
We were people building a website and becoming more knowledgeable because of it.
Some things made sense quickly.
Some things were frustrating.
Some things felt technical for no reason.
Some things clicked after hearing them three different ways.
That’s usually how growth works.
Messier than it looks from the outside.
Small changes created momentum
There wasn’t one giant move that changed everything.
It was a bunch of smaller ones stacked together.
A better title.
A clearer page.
A stronger call to action.
More useful blogs.
Internal links between posts.
Cleaner messaging.
More local relevance.
Consistency.
None of those moments felt dramatic.
But together, they started to build something.
That lesson also shows up in You Don’t Have to Pay to Win Google Business Profile Ranking. Visibility often comes from steady effort more than flashy tactics.
Sometimes progress looks like proof, not perfection
Then one day I searched “marketing help in Lebanon, MO.”
And there we were.
Not number one in the world.
Not a viral moment.
Not a trophy.
Just proof.
Proof that the hours mattered.
Proof that learning mattered.
Proof that small improvements matter.
Proof that showing up consistently can move something.
That screenshot probably wouldn’t mean much to most people.
To me, it meant a lot.
Because it reminded me that progress usually shows up quietly first.
And honestly… I think a lot of business owners need that reminder.
You may not need fireworks.
You may just need one sign that what you’re building is starting to work.
That was ours.
