It Started Before I was Ready

Sometimes the thing works… before you do.

And that’s the uncomfortable part. PS... I typically never wear a stocking cap but it was really cold that day and this interview wasn't planned. We made the best of it though!

You don’t build it first. You grow into it.

There was a moment in Flour Jack  conversation where it hit me.

She didn’t wait to figure it all out.

She just… started.

Name first. Brand second. Confidence somewhere down the road.

And I think that’s where most people get stuck.

We think the order is:

Figure it out → Build it → Share it

But it’s not.

It’s:

Start → Adjust → Figure it out in public

Marketing is not about having it polished. It’s about being visible while it’s still messy.

The brand came before the person

She built “Flour Jack” before she really introduced herself.

At first that sounds backwards.

But it’s not.

It’s protection. It’s testing. It’s low-risk identity building.

And honestly… it’s something a lot of people are doing whether they realize it or not.

Most businesses struggle with social media because they’re afraid to attach themselves to it.

But here’s the reality:

People don’t connect with logos. They connect with people behind them.

Eventually, the shift has to happen.

And when it did… things moved.

What actually makes something work?

It wasn’t the bread.

It wasn’t even the brand.

It was attention.

She said it without saying it.

Posting in groups. Showing up. Being loud enough to be seen.

That’s it.

Content creation is just consistent visibility around something real.

That’s why some things “randomly” take off.

They don’t.

They’re just seen more.

So what are people actually buying?

Not bread.

Not cookies.

Not even the brand name.

They’re buying a feeling.

“Creator of nostalgia.”

That line stuck.

Because it explains something most businesses miss.

Small business marketing isn’t about the product. It’s about how people feel when they experience it.

That’s why two people can sell the same thing…

…and one builds something bigger.

Why does this work in a place like Lebanon?

That question kept sitting there.

Why here?

Why now?

And I think the answer is simple.

Connection.

Community marketing works because people want to support something they feel part of.

Not something that’s just selling to them.

That’s why a farm stand with no lockbox can exist here.

That’s why people buy from people.

That’s why something small can grow fast.

The part nobody talks about

There was a moment that didn’t feel like business advice… but it was.

“I wish I would’ve taken care of myself sooner.”

That’s real.

Because growth isn’t just strategy.

It’s energy.

Consistency works because it removes the pressure of perfection.

But consistency requires capacity.

And capacity comes from how you’re actually doing… not just what you’re building.

What does “figuring it out” actually look like?

It looks like:

  • Trying things that might not work

  • Building something no one asked for yet

  • Partnering with people and learning as you go

  • Having no clear path… but moving anyway

That’s it.

No blueprint.

No perfect plan.

Just movement.

So what’s the takeaway?

You don’t need to be ready.

You need to be visible.

You don’t need a perfect brand.

You need something you’re willing to stand behind… even if it’s still evolving.

And you don’t need to understand everything.

You just need to start.

Final thought

Most people are waiting for clarity.

But clarity usually shows up after you’ve already started.

Not before. Want to see the full interview with Flour Jack?
